Broccoli

Broccoli is a green cruciferous vegetable characterized by its thick edible stalk and a compact, flowering head made up of numerous tightly clustered green florets. The head resembles a miniature tree. Its leaves are also edible and have a slightly tougher texture. The most common variety is the green type, though there are also purple cultivars.

Description

Nutritional & Health Benefits:
Broccoli is one of the most nutrient-dense vegetables. It is rich in vitamin C, vitamin K, folate, beta-carotene, iron, and fiber. It also contains sulforaphane, a compound with strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, which may support immune function and detoxification and contribute to the prevention of chronic diseases. Its fiber content aids digestion and regulates cholesterol levels.

Culinary Uses:
Broccoli can be eaten both raw and cooked. It’s commonly steamed, boiled, sautéed, grilled, or roasted, often seasoned with olive oil, lemon, garlic, or herbs. It’s ideal as a side dish, in salads, pasta, soups, stir-fries, and casseroles. Cooking it lightly helps preserve its nutrients and crunch. The stems, when peeled, are tender and flavorful.

Storage:
Fresh broccoli should be stored unwashed in the refrigerator, preferably in a perforated bag to allow air circulation. It typically keeps for 3 to 5 days. For longer storage, it can be blanched and frozen, preserving both its flavor and nutritional value.
