Description
Medlar is one of the earliest stone fruits to ripen, with harvest beginning as early as March in certain regions. It has an ovoid shape, with a shiny, juicy, and compact pulp that turns orange or yellow at peak ripeness. The easily removable skin protects a seed that can occupy up to 40% of the fruit’s volume, which can be gently pressed out. Known for its unique sweet flavor, medlar can be slightly acidic depending on the variety, with popular types including Algar, Callosa, Bernia, and Nadal.
Medlar offers natural astringent properties, supports digestive health, and provides diuretic and antidiarrheal benefits. It may also help reduce cholesterol and support circulatory and cardiovascular wellness.
