White Mushrooms

The mushroom is a fleshy fungus characterized by a semi-round to rounded cap, depending on the variety. Its color can range from white and light cream to light or dark brown. The smooth skin may show light scaling when environmental humidity is low. The stipe (foot) is white, straight, and cylindrical, attaching to the mycelium—a network of filaments growing in the substrate. Mushrooms vary in size, influenced by their growing conditions, and are available year-round.

Description

Nutritional & Health Benefits:
Mushrooms are low in calories and an excellent source of B vitamins (especially B2 and B3), vitamin D, potassium, selenium, and antioxidants. They support immune health, energy metabolism, and cell protection. Mushrooms are also naturally fat-free, cholesterol-free, and rich in fiber, making them suitable for balanced diets.

Culinary Uses:
Mushrooms are versatile in the kitchen. They can be enjoyed raw in salads, sautéed, grilled, roasted, or added to soups, stews, pasta, and risottos. Their umami flavor enhances both vegetarian and meat-based dishes. Larger varieties are often stuffed and baked, while button mushrooms are popular in everyday cooking.

Storage:
Mushrooms should be stored in a cool, dry place, ideally in the refrigerator, unwashed and in a paper bag to prevent moisture accumulation. Properly stored, they keep fresh for 3–5 days. To extend shelf life, they can also be cooked and then frozen.
