Jujube

The Jujube, from the Rhamnaceae family, is a small, olive-like fruit produced by the Ziziphus zizyphus plant. It measures 3 to 4 centimeters, with a light green skin that turns reddish brown when ripe. Its sweet, floury pulp resembles that of an apple, and both the skin and flesh are edible.

Description

Rich in vitamin C, magnesium, potassium, copper, calcium, and niacin, the jujube is highly valued for its nutritional and medicinal properties. Its flavonoid content provides powerful antioxidant effects, helping to regulate blood pressure and support liver health. It is also used as a natural remedy for anemia.

Jujubes are enjoyed fresh or dried, at various stages of ripeness. In Lebanon and Jordan, they are commonly served as an aperitif or dessert, while dried jujubes are used as a substitute for dates in sweet or savory dishes. A popular preparation involves brewing the dried fruit into tea, which is traditionally consumed to soothe sore throats.

The fruit can be stored fresh, preserved, or dried for later use, maintaining its delicate flavor and nutritional qualities.
