Chayote

The Chayote is the fruit of the chayotera plant, belonging to the cucurbitaceae family. Recognizable for its pear-like shape and smooth ivory rind with delicate ridges, this unique fruit contains a single seed that germinates inside the flesh itself. Each chayote can weigh anywhere from 200 grams to 2 kilograms.

Description

Composed of 90% water and with a low starch content, chayote is an excellent choice for light, balanced diets. It is known for its diuretic, cardiovascular, and anti-inflammatory properties. In traditional uses, tea made from its leaves is valued for supporting arteriosclerosis, hypertension, and helping to dissolve kidney stones.

Chayote’s flesh is tender and delicately flavored, making it perfect for a variety of dishes — boiled, fried, in soups, salads, or stews. It pairs wonderfully with lemon and olive oil, offering freshness and texture in every bite.

For best preservation, store in a cool, dark, and well-ventilated place.
