Salak

The Salak (Salacca zalacca), commonly known as “snake fruit” due to its reddish-brown scaly skin, is the fruit of a small palm tree with a short trunk and long, sharp thorns. Each oval drupe, measuring 5–8 cm in length, grows in clusters at the base of the palm. Inside the peel lies a firm, segmented pulp that encloses a hard seed about the size of a hazelnut.

Description

Nutritional & Health Benefits: Salak is rich in vitamins and minerals, notably calcium, phosphorus, iron, and beta-carotene, which supports eye health. In traditional medicine, it is valued for improving vision and treating digestive issues such as diarrhea.

Flavor & Uses: The flesh of the salak is crisp and juicy, with a sweet and tangy flavor reminiscent of an apple. It is typically eaten fresh after peeling but can also be added to fruit salads or desserts.

Storage: In warm, humid climates, salak keeps well at room temperature for about one week. In cooler environments, it can be stored for up to three weeks without losing its texture or taste.
